  2. Design your Messy Monster. What will it look like? Will it have friends?
  3. Carefully color your Messy Monster. Don’t forget to show where it lives and what it’s getting into!
  4. Take home your artwork with you.

K-5: Make Some Money

Have you heard the news? money

There are changes coming to the $20, $10, and $5 bills! The most notable is that the front of the $20 bill will feature Harriet Tubman, the first female AND the first African-American featured on American currency.

Do you know about Harriet Tubman? Learn more here or watch on BrainPop Jr.tubman

Here’s what our currency looks like right now. If you could print your own money:

  • What would it look like?
  • What denominations would it be?
  • Who would be featured on it?
  • What colors would it include?

Military Appreciation Month

April is National Military Appreciation Month and Southside wants to show how thankful we are to have brave men and women serving our country. We will create cards to send to our military. Here is a video to get you thinking.

Step 1: Fold your paper in half, like a hamburger. You can have the seam on the TOP or on the LEFT side.

Step 2: Open your card, write a sentence (or more!) to say “thank you.” Some words you might use are: thank you, help, service, appreciate, hard work, dedication, military, family. If you don’t know how to spell a word, as a friend or me.

Step 3: Draw a picture on the front. Remember, we want to show how thankful we are for the military’s service. Color your drawing and make it your best work.

WC Community Dinner: K-5 Dinner Plates

What is your favorite meal for dinner? Why? Artists have been painting their food since the very beginning of art. Why do you think artists are interested in making art showing food?

We will do the same thing, showing food in our artwork.  We will make place mats for a Woodford County Community Dinner. Our place mats will show our favorite dinners. Food art is always popular!

For more information on the Community Dinner, please contact Mrs. Bargo.

K-5 Ishi’s Light- Clay Sculptures

What are your 5 senses? Have you ever made an artwork that uses several senses?  The artist, Anish Kapoor, has. He wants his art to be an experience for your senses. Watch the video to learn more.

Here are two of his famous artworks, you might recognize the one on the left, Cloud Gate, which is in Chicago.

Goal: I can make a mini clay sculpture people can interact with using more than one sense. It might be like an abstract shape, building, or play structure. What would someone see, smell, hear, and feel while inside your sculpture?

K-2nd Van Gogh’s Moving Drawings

The artist, Vincent Van Gogh, wanted his art to look exciting, like it was coming to life.

It’s your turn… Steps:

  1. Choose an indoor place or an outdoor place- it has to be a real place, not imaginary.
  2. Carefully draw your place and add details to give us clues about your place. Use your memory: your favorite place to eat, your favorite store, an amusement park, your yard, the playground.
  3. Use crayons and markers to color your drawing. Use lines like Van Gogh to showing lots of movement.

Check out the movement (literally!) in Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

K-5 People of the Future

Do you ever think about the future?  Artists think about the future and imagine what people and the world could be like.  Click on the image to learn more about these artists.

Draw a picture of what you think you would look like in the future.  Would you have superpowers? Would you be able to time travel, help other people, have an incredible memory? What will people look like in the future? What will the world around you look like?  Will there be flying cars, robots, spaceships?

K-5: Big, back to school, collaborative project

I’m so excited about our first project of the school year.  The whole school will participate in one big, back to school, collaborative project.

What’s a collaborative project?  It’s when you work with other people to create an artwork.  For this project, each student will create one artwork that we’ll put together to create one large artwork.

Here is an example of a collaborative artwork.  Each student made one heart, then all the hearts were combined to make one large artwork.  What types of lines and colors do you see?  Do you have a favorite square?

We’re going to take inspiration from our school’s theme of superheroes.  What better way to remind us that we’re all superheroes than by creating an artwork together?

Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade: If you were a superhero what would your shield look like?  What types of lines, shapes, and colors would you use?  How would it show who you are?

3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade: What is your real-life superpower?  Are you a kind friend?  Great at math?  Wonderful at helping others?  A fantastic teammate?  How would you depict your best qualities on a cape?
