2nd grade- Season Masks

The 2nd grade will learn about mask-making.  They will learn that, all over the world, people wear masks.  Masks are worn for many reasons, like celebrations and holidays.  Have you ever worn a mask?  Did it change the way you felt or acted?  Do you have a favorite mask to wear?

Most masks are the same on both sides, which means they have symmetry. Many masks have textures added, like feathers or beads. Do you see symmetry and texture in these masks?

How are music, dance, and art all connected?  This is the Raven Dance (dance), which shows the Raven Mask (art), instruments, and singing (music). What a way to celebrate a raven!

Your mask will celebrate your favorite season. Think of what symbols or pictures you could use to show your season. What season do these masks show?

2nd grade Space Collages

The 2nd grade is learning about the neutral colors: brown, gray, white, black.  We learned that Russian artist, Natalia Goncharova, painted what she thought space looked like.

Your turn…Steps:

  1. Compare Goncharova’s paintings to the images from space. What are the differences? Similarities?
  2. Brainstorm what is in outer space, like asteroids, planets- so much more!
  3. Students have a large black paper for their background.
  4. Students need three, small pieces of neutral paper: gray, white, brown.
  5. Draw your outer space objects on the small papers. Cut them out and glue them down.
  6. Add details to your planets, such as craters.
  7.  Use shiny foil to add stars, spaceships, and astronauts to your artwork. Be careful, foil is tricky to cut!

2nd Grade Secondary Color Squares

The 2nd grade is learning about Ellsworth Kelly, who created Colors for a Large Wall.  This artwork shows 64 canvases placed together to make one artwork.  Students are learning about composition (how artwork is arranged), and how to mix the secondary colors. Here’s our color math:

  • Primary + Primary = Secondary
  • Red         + Blue        = ___________
  • Red         + Yellow    = ___________
  • Blue        + Yellow    = ___________

We will mix the secondary colors and create a color composition like Ellsworth Kelly.

“The yearlong Centennial Celebration is an exceptional opportunity for Kentucky students of all ages to learn about the architectural, political and social history of the Governor’s mansion,” said Mrs. Beshear.  “These contests are a perfect way to get students involved in the Celebration, and winners will be honored at a special ceremony and have their works displayed at the Mansion alongside historical Centennial exhibits.”

The visual art contest is open to students in grades K-12. Students may use any medium to create a two- or three-dimensional artwork that reflects one of the visual art contest’s themes. First, second and third place winners will be named for students in grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12.  Students must submit digital images of their work for judging.

The essay contest is open to students in grades 4-12 who must choose one of three writing prompts for the theme of their essay.  First, second and third place winners will be selected at the following award levels:  grades 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.

First place winners in each age group will receive a $100 prize, join the First Lady for lunch at the mansion and have their work publicly displayed at the mansion.  Prize-winning student art work and essays will become sole property of the mansion as part of the mansion’s permanent collection.

Complete contest information, rules, judging criteria and an official entry form are available online at http://governorsmansion.ky.gov/centennial/contest/.  Only electronic entries submitted via e-mail will be accepted.   The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 14.  Questions may be directed to maryann.miller@education.ky.gov or rebecca.blessing@education.ky.gov.

Fall 2013- 2nd grade

The second grade learned that narrative art tells a story.  We created artworks that told a story about summer vacation.

We have also been learning the difference between geometric and organic shapes.  We created a collage using geometric shapes and added organic shape details.
