Landscape & Still Life

The third grade has been learning about the three types of subject matter: landscape, still life, and portrait.  They learned that landscapes have a foreground, middleground, and background.  They learned that objects appear smaller when they are further away.  We created an imaginatively colored landscape based on David Hockney’s Mulholland Drive.

The third grade has learned that a still life shows objects that do not move.  They learned that objects overlap to create distance and shadows can help show where light is showing.  The third grade learned how to draw from observation.

Second grade

The second grade has been learning how to mix secondary colors: green, violet, and orange.  They mixed their own colors and created artwork based on Ellsworth Kelly’s artwork: Colors for a Large Wall.

Color, Shape, and Abstract Art

The first grade has been learning that colors go along with feelings.  We looked at the artwork of Wassily Kandinsky and listened to music.  We painted with colors that matched the mood of the music.

The first grade has also been learning about abstract art.  We learned that abstract art doesn’t show things realistically.  We looked at The Snail by Henri Matisse and created our own abstract animals.

Patterns & Texture

The kindergarten has been learning about patterns.  They looked at Monet’s garden paintings and identified colors.  We learned that patterns can use repeating colors.

The kindergarten has been learning about texture.  We learned that texture shows how something feels in an artwork.  We created mixed-up chameleons with texture like Eric Carle’s book: The Mixed-Up Chameleon.

5th gr.- Fall Artwork

The 5th grade has been learning how different lines express different emotions.  We created “action” paintings based on Jackson Pollock’s art.  We also created mixed-media collages that expressed one emotion.

4th gr.- Fall Artwork

The 4th grade has been learning about radial balance, symmetry, and pattern.  They have also been learning about Georgia O’Keeffe’s abstract artworks.  We created flower paintings using texture, cropping, and complementary colors.
