KY All-State Art Show- 2nd place!
Congratulations to Mila! Her artwork won 2nd place in Elementary Painting at the 2018 KY Elementary and Middle School All State Art Show. What a special recognition!

2018 Art to Remember- Thank you!
Thank you, Southside Families! We had a very successful Art to Remember fundraiser and raised $2079.60 to support our art program! Our students and art program will benefit so much from these funds. Thank you for continuing to support art in Woodford County!
2018 Francisco’s Farm Art Festival
Southside Elementary will have 12 students’ artworks shown at this year’s Francisco’s Farm Art Festival in Midway, KY. This Festival shows fine art and crafts from all over the country, and this year will include artworks from students across Woodford County. Student artworks will be located in the foyer of the Ann Hart Raymond building at Midway University.
2018 KY Elementary and Middle School All State Art Show
Southside has five students, one from 1st through 5th grades, whose artworks will be on display at the All State Art Show. Come support artists from all over Kentucky!

2018 Doodle 4 Google
It’s time for the 2018 Doodle 4 Google contest! This year’s theme is: “What inspires me?” Think: I am ____, because ____ , so I will ____. What is a Doodle?
General info:
- DUE to Ms. Baird- Friday, March 2.
- This contest is optional.
- Design must be 2-D.
- Your design must be done on the entry form or be able to be taped onto the entry form. No bigger than 4.5″x 10″. I have entry forms available or you can click here to print one at home.
- You may use class time (not during Art to Remember) or work on this.

Art to Remember 2018
Southside Parents & Families,
This January, all grades (preK-5) will create artworks for the Art to Remember fundraiser. Art to Remember provides families with an easy way to have their students’ artworks printed on items such as: iPhone covers, water bottles, and stickers.

After weeks of hard work, the 5th grade has completed their bibelots. The theme for this year’s exhibit is “Under the Sea”.

Art Contest: 2017 Woodford County Conservation District
2017 Conservation Writing & Jim Claypool Art Contest
The 2017 Art and Writing Contest has begun!
The top three entries are selected from each school and from those the county level winners for Art and Writing are selected by a panel of judges.
This year’s theme is about Water!!!!
Entries are due to the Conservation District no later than December 1, 2017! Entry Form (must be attached to back of entry!
***If you want Ms. Baird to turn in your artwork for you, these are due Friday, November 17.***
RULES
- Kentucky students grades 6-12 are eligible to compete in the writing contest. Only students through grade 5 may compete in the art contest.
- A student may not enter both the Jim Claypool Conservation Art Contest and the Conservation Writing Contest during the same contest.
- An entry must be created by one and only one student. Any entry submitted by more than one student will be disqualified.
- All entries become the property of the contest sponsors. The decisions of the judges at all levels of competition are final.
- WRITING: the entry may not exceed 1,000 words and must be written in ink or typed on one side of the paper only. Typed entries must be written in 12pt font, Times New Roman or Calibri. No photographs or artwork may be included with the written work. It is suggested that the written entry take the form of informational writing (from the perspective of an informed writer to a less informed reader) and may be in the form of a letter, blog entry, editorial or speech. It should persuade the reader to take action toward good soil conservation practices or propose a solution to one or more soil conservation issues. The work should be from the student author and avoid plagiarism from this source or other sources. Sources should be cited.
- ARTWORK: shall be 8 ½”x11”. Any thickness or color of art board may be used. Art paper may be used, but must be pasted onto art board or cardboard before submitting for competition. NO plywood will be accepted. Artwork may be rendered in any medium: pencil, ink, charcoal, crayon, oil, etc., but it must be flat art. 3-D art is unacceptable; however, collages, photographs or other art pasted onto your board will be accepted as long as it is flat art pasted securely to the poster board. An art entry may take the form of a poster, newspaper advertisement or editorial cartoon, making sure that whatever form is used the artwork conveys a message at a glance that persuades its viewers to take action toward good soil conservation practices
- The official entry form must be completed and secured to the back of your entry.
HELPFUL HINTS
- Keep entry simple and sincere.
- Be creative and original. Avoid plagiarism by using original words and ideas. Plagiarism is defined as the act of stealing and passing off the words of another as your own without crediting the source.
- Consider an area of soil that is important to you, your family and your community.
- Draw from your personal interests or experiences.
- Writing entry should take the form of informational.
- Think about soil issues in your community, farm, subdivision or city.
- Interview people in your community about changes in Water issues.
- Find ways to improve Water in your community. TAKE ACTION!

5th grade- 2018 Improbable Baubles with the Headley-Whitney Museum
The fifth grade will work on a collaborative project with the Headley-Whitney Museum to create sculptures, write artist statements, and participate in a museum exhibition!
The Headley-Whitney Museum is home to a collection of George Headley’s bibelots. A bibelot (pronounced bee-bah-low) is a small, decorative object. Here are some of George Headley’s bibelots:
Like George Headley, we will create bibelots. We will turn “trash” into “treasures.” You may bring in items from home. Keep in mind: all bibelots must fit in our “SIZE BOX.”
So what are we doing?

Rules
- No violent or inappropriate themes
- Your piece must fit in the size box.
- At least 50% of your piece must be recycled materials
- Your piece should be appealing from all sides
- East artist will complete a bibelot, a photograph of their bibelot, and an artist’s statement
DATES TO REMEMBER:
Opening reception to celebrate: Saturday, November 17
November 17-December 22: Our bibelots will be on display at the Headley-Whitney Museum! All participating students will have their artist statement and photograph exhibited.
