Great news! Southside has five 4th grade students whose artwork will be shown at the 2016 All-State Elementary & Middle School Art Show. Artworks will be on display from May 9-27 in Nicholasville. Come check out all the talented artists from across Kentucky. More information below:

Important dates:
Please make sure your Art to Remember order form has your student’s name and artwork on it. Each form is personalized, so it is very important that you have your student’s order form. *If you have another student’s order form, please return it to me (Ms. Baird) and I will get you a new one.
This year, Southside is using online or phone orders only. Directions on how to order are on the back of your order form. Please do not send completed orders, checks, or money to school.

Here is the Kentucky School Board Association banner that select students painted to represent this year’s theme: From chalkboards to whiteboards: 8 decades of serving school boards. Mr. Hawkins asked us to paint this to represent Woodford County at the KSBA 2016 annual conference. Congratulations, students, you did a fantastic job!
The kindergarten learned that Regina could overcome her mistakes to make a great jungle artwork. Now, they’ll learn that artist, Felipe Archuleta, loved to create animal sculptures. Regina’s animals were flat on paper, but Felipe’s animals are 3-D. They are not flat. Do Felipe’s animals look just like real animals? How are they the same or different?

We will create our favorite jungle animals out of clay, just like Felipe. We will learn to form our clay into sculptures.
Subject Matter- Landscape
There are three types of subject matter: landscape, portrait, and still life. We’re learning that landscapes show nature, portraits show people, and still lifes show objects.
Our landscape artist is David Hockney. He’s an English artist who is known for painting landscapes and using bright colors. Here is a video showing Hockney’s artworks and he’s speaking on the importance of making art. (Studio Habit of Mind- Observe, Stretch and Explore, Express)
Student artworks: Artists drew landscapes showing distance. Then they chose warm or cool colors to create imaginative landscapes.

“As part of an ongoing effort to bring increased awareness of the legislature to the people of the Commonwealth, the Kentucky State Senate is sponsoring what we hope will be an annual back to school event for our youngest citizens, the first annual “Greetings from Kentucky” poster contest.”

Please join us anytime on Saturday, November 14th from 1:00-3:00 at the Headley-Whitney Museum. The museum is a short drive from Versailles and is showcasing our 5th graders’ bibelot sculptures. ALL 5th grade students will have their artist statements and photographs of their bibelots at the museum. The Improbable Baubles exhibit will be from Nov. 14- Dec. 20.

What is your favorite meal for dinner? Why? Artists have been painting their food since the very beginning of art. Why do you think artists are interested in making art showing food?
We will do the same thing, showing food in our artwork. We will make place mats for a Woodford County Community Dinner. Our place mats will show our favorite dinners. Food art is always popular!
