Why do people make art? How does making art make life better? Alma Thomas was an African American abstract artist. She studied art in college and became an art teacher. She make art part time while she was teaching. When she retired from teaching, she focused on making art. She developed her signature style of using shapes and short brushstrokes to create abstract art. She was often inspired by nature and plants around her and used their colors and shapes in her paintings. She was the first African American woman to have a solo art exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. What do you see in her artworks that remind you of nature?
