The kindergarten has been learning about texture. We are learning how Eric Carle uses texture in the story of the Very Quiet Cricket. Which textures do you see?
Kindergarten- Textures
The kindergarten has been learning about textures. Here is a video that helps introduce the concept of texture and descriptive language.
4th grade- Landscape Paintings
The 4th grade is studying Grant Wood and his landscape paintings. A landscape is an artwork that shows mostly land. It has four parts. Objects, like a far away tree, can be on the horizon line and in the background. What happens to objects as they appear farther away?

Now, onto our artist, Grant Wood:
- What do you notice about Grant Wood’s painting style?
- Do his landscapes look just like a photograph, or different? How?
- Can you find the foreground, middleground, background, and horizon line in his landscapes below?
Let’s create some landscapes. You can add people and animals, too.
Here’s the rubric, look at the level 4 goals:
Steps: (Of course, your art will be on paper!)
1st grade- Henri Matisse
The first grade is learning about the artist, Henri Matisse.
This is Matisse’s collage, The Snail. To create this artwork, Matisse painted papers, then cut and glued them onto a paper. He had to think very carefully about where he put his shapes. Where you put shapes in your artwork is called composition. How does Matisse’s composition give us clues that this is a snail?
We will use geometric shapes to create a composition showing an animal. We will paint our animals with bright colors, like Matisse.
2014 Bibelots- Improbable Baubles at the Headley-Whitney Museum
The 5th graders have completed their bibelot sculptures! After weeks of hard work, building, and lots of glitter, we have created treasures to be displayed at the Headley-Whitney Museum. Students voted on five or six artworks to be physically displayed at the Museum. ALL 5th grade students will have a photograph of their bibelot with a written artist statement explaining their creative process.
2nd Grade Secondary Color Squares
The 2nd grade is learning about Ellsworth Kelly, who created Colors for a Large Wall. This artwork shows 64 canvases placed together to make one artwork. Students are learning about composition (how artwork is arranged), and how to mix the secondary colors. Here’s our color math:
- Primary + Primary = Secondary
- Red + Blue = ___________
- Red + Yellow = ___________
- Blue + Yellow = ___________
The Museum of Modern Art: http://www.moma.org/interactives/destination/destination.html
We will mix the secondary colors and create a color composition like Ellsworth Kelly.
Color Song by Scratch Garden
This song is incredibly catchy AND it has a robot riding a unicorn. What more could you want? This song helps students learn primary, secondary, warm, and cool color families.
